Practice Development Unit

The Practice Development Unit (MHSOP) is managed by Cardiff & Vale UHB. The team supports and develops high quality services for people with dementia, older people with severe late life mental health problems and the carers of these client groups. They are involved in service evaluation, strategic planning, research and development and, specialist training and consultancy.

The Practice Development Unit is a resource and information centre for staff and carers. A tri-annual specialist journal entitled “Signpost – Journal of Dementia and Mental Health Care of Older People” is available online at www.dsdc.bangor.ac.uk/signpost.

Good links also exist with the national network of Dementia Services Development Centres, and the Practice Development Unit in Cardiff acts as the South Wales base. The DSDC Wales and the North base are located at Bangor University. Professor Bob Woods is the Director for the DSDC Wales.

Specialist training courses are also organised by the Practice Development Unit, including SOLACE – Skills Oriented Learning Approach for Care of the Elders with mental health needs, which is a 7 day certificated learning course.
