Summary of aims & objectives:

Our vision is to consistently provide the highest possible quality of independent advocacy.

Our focus is to value, support and work with people who need to be heard in order to promote social inclusion, equality and social justice.

Services:

Our services support people in obtaining information about their mental health problems, treatment, services, rights and options, to have a say in their treatment and care, and to make complaints if necessary.

Independent Mental Health Advocacy is for:

  • People detained under the Mental Health Act or subject to a Community Treatment Order or Guardianship.
  • Conditionally discharged restricted patients.
  • Patients being considered for ECT or neurosurgery.
  • Informal inpatients being treated or assessed for a mental health condition.

Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy is for:

People who lack capacity and have no-one else to support them in matters regarding...

  • Proposals to provide serious medical treatment
  • Proposals to arrange or change accommodation
  • Care reviews
  • Adult protection cases

An advocate may also be required in cases where Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are applied.

Community Advocacy is for:

  • People receiving secondary mental health services, e.g. being managed by a CMHT, receiving treatment from a psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • Former service users wishing to be reassessed for a service.
  • Psychiatric inpatients requiring advocacy for issues not related to medication or treatment (e.g. housing, benefits).

Referrals accepted from anyone. Self referrals can be made in any way including by phone, letter, email or speaking to an advocate. We would prefer professionals to use a referral from which is available on request or on our website.
