Hoarding disorder training:

An evidence-based course on ways to support a recovery path from hoarding in a compassionate and trauma-informed manner.

As a tenancy management issue, hoarding has become one of the leading causes of eviction. With a prevalence rate that is more than treble that of schizophrenia and OCD, hoarding disorder is remarkably unresponsive to medication, and house clearances have a 100% relapse rate without therapeutic input.

Ideally, for every enforcement action taken, two supportive steps should be carried out. What are these steps? How can a dialogue be started with those who do not want support?

This course will consider hoarding disorder in a holistic and therapeutic context, exploring alternatives to house clearances and eviction, and looking at the positives to buying into a new model of support for this incredibly complex and often misunderstood illness.

Course content:

  • The tales behind the treasure: why do people hoard?
  • Early signs of hoarding & how to start a compassionate dialogue.
  • Types of hoarding, and where these fit into the new diagnostic criteria of hoarding disorder.
  • Hoarding from a tenancy governance perspective – the impact of enforcement action and house clearances.
  • Treatment pathways and practical support.
  • Hoarding toolkit.
  • How can professionals develop a community task force.

Who is it aimed at:

All those looking to expand their knowledge on hoarding, allowing the expertise of a variety of delegates from across all different fields to be channelled. Hoarding is an issue that will invariably be encountered not only by professionals working in housing and mental health, but Emergency Services, Social Services, Environmental Health and Local Authorities.
